The Island Peak Trek combines the classic Everest trekking experience with an exciting introduction to Himalayan peak climbing.
The journey follows the spectacular trail through Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche and the Imja Valley before reaching Island Peak Base Camp. With its glaciated terrain, steep sections and spectacular Himalayan surroundings, Island Peak provides a rewarding challenge for trekkers looking to experience their first Himalayan climbing adventure.
The adventure begins in Kathmandu before the scenic flight to Lukla. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi Valley toward Phakding and continues to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant gateway to the Everest region.
After acclimatization in Namche, the route continues through beautiful forests and traditional Sherpa villages toward Tengboche. The spectacular monastery and surrounding Himalayan peaks create one of the most memorable sections of the journey.
From Dingboche, the trail enters the high alpine landscape of the Imja Valley and continues toward Chhukhung and Island Peak Base Camp. After preparation and climbing training, the summit attempt takes you across glaciated terrain and steeper climbing sections toward the 6,189-metre summit.
From the summit, climbers can experience spectacular views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Makalu and the surrounding Himalayan peaks before descending back through the Khumbu Valley toward Lukla.

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu. Meet your climbing team and complete the expedition briefing, equipment preparation and final checks before heading into the Khumbu region.
Take an early morning flight toward Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From Lukla begin the trek through Chheplung and along the Dudh Koshi Valley toward Phakding, surrounded by forested hills and Himalayan landscapes.
Follow the Dudh Koshi River through pine forests and traditional Sherpa settlements. Cross suspension bridges and continue uphill toward the famous trading town of Namche Bazaar, the main gateway to the high Khumbu.
Spend the day acclimatizing around Namche Bazaar. Take an optional hike toward the Everest View area for panoramic mountain scenery while allowing your body to adapt gradually to the increasing altitude.
Trek along the scenic ridge above the Dudh Koshi Valley with spectacular views of Everest, Ama Dablam and surrounding peaks. Descend toward the river before climbing through rhododendron forests to Tengboche and its famous monastery.
Continue into the upper Khumbu Valley, passing through Pangboche and traditional mountain settlements. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine as the trail follows the Imja Valley toward Dingboche, with dramatic views of Ama Dablam and the surrounding peaks.
Take an acclimatization day in Dingboche. Depending on conditions, hike toward the surrounding ridges for higher-altitude exposure and magnificent views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and the Imja Valley. The day also provides an opportunity to review climbing preparation.
Leave the main Everest trail and follow the Imja Valley toward Chhukung. The trail passes through an increasingly rugged alpine landscape beneath towering peaks including Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Island Peak. Chhukung becomes the staging point for the climb.
Spend the day acclimatizing around Chhukung and preparing for the Island Peak climb. Depending on conditions, take a higher acclimatization hike and practice essential climbing techniques including crampon, harness, rope and ascender use.
Trek deeper into the Imja Valley toward Island Peak Base Camp. The trail crosses rugged moraine terrain with increasingly dramatic views of Island Peak and the surrounding high Himalayan peaks. Arrive at Base Camp and prepare for the technical section of the climb.
Rest and prepare at Island Peak Base Camp. Review climbing equipment, rope systems, crampon technique and summit procedures with the climbing team. The schedule may be adjusted according to weather, snow and route conditions.
Move higher toward Island Peak High Camp. The terrain becomes increasingly steep and technical as the climbing route approaches the upper mountain. After reaching High Camp, prepare for an early summit attempt and rest as conditions allow.
Begin the summit push in the early hours. Ascend across glacial terrain and follow the fixed-rope climbing section toward the summit ridge. Reach the summit of Island Peak at approximately 6,189 m, weather and route conditions permitting, before descending toward Chhukung.
Complete the descent from the Island Peak climbing route and return toward Chhukung. After the demanding summit day, take time to recover and celebrate the climb while surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Imja Valley.
Retrace the trail through the beautiful Imja Valley and return to Dingboche. The descent provides a welcome change after the summit effort and offers another opportunity to enjoy the mountain scenery.
Descend through Pangboche and the lower Imja Valley toward Tengboche. Enjoy the changing landscape as alpine terrain gives way to forests and revisit the monastery surrounded by spectacular Himalayan peaks.
Continue downhill through forests and Sherpa settlements before following the Dudh Koshi Valley back toward Namche Bazaar. Enjoy your final evening in the lively mountain town before the return to Lukla.
Follow the trail down the Dudh Koshi Valley, crossing suspension bridges and passing through the familiar villages of the lower Khumbu. Complete the final trekking section and arrive in Lukla for the night.
Fly from Lukla back to Kathmandu, weather and flight conditions permitting. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy time to rest after completing the Island Peak climbing journey. The schedule may include flexibility for mountain weather and flight delays.
Depending on your international flight schedule, enjoy some final free time in Kathmandu before your transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey.
